“Smart Inclusive Transitions” for an Equitable Urban Future: Monitoring SIT using Global Urban Monitoring Framework of UN-Habitat

By 2030, two-thirds of the global population is expected to live in cities, transforming urban areas into hubs of both innovation and inequality. This raise a critical question: how can we reshape our approach to creating more equitable and sustainable urban futures? This symposium-launch event will introduce the "Smart-Inclusive Transition (SIT)," a collaborative initiative developed by UN-Habitat, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, and Seoul National University, from 1:00 to 5:00 pm on October 18, 2024.

The Smart-Inclusive Transition (SIT) focuses on combining smart technology with inclusive practices to ensure that everyone – regardless of ability, location, or socio-economic status – can access, share, utilize, and benefit from essential resources and information. Through SIT Analysis, cities can track their progress using UN-SDG data from the Global Urban Monitoring Framework of UN-Habitat, identifying best practices and tailored actions to meet their unique needs.

The event has two main goals. First, it will highlight the success of the initiative with the launch of the UN's official publication, “Monitoring Smart-Inclusive Transition (SIT) towards Equitable Urban Futures using the Global Urban Monitoring Framework.” Second, the event will spark a lively discussion on how SIT can be applied to real-world urban policies, bringing together experts from universities, policymakers, UN-Habitat, and industry leaders.
